Chaim Gross Museum TOUR
Join us for a tour a tour of the studio and museum of the sculptor Chaim Gross (1904-1991). Chaim Gross studied as a teenager at the Educational Alliance Art School. He became a successful artist leading the way of the 20th century revival of 'direct carving.' His sculptures are in major museum in the United States and internationally. He later returned to teach in the Art School, and stayed to teach for over 60 years. There are few 'artist house museum' in the United States, The New York Times referred to this museum located in the heart of Greenwich village as a "treasure of New York City"

"DRAWING SURREALISM" An Exhibit of Drawings by Surrealist Artists, 1925-1950
Surrealism is often seen only through the lens of Salvador Dali but the creative drawing techniques that the surrealist artists invented continued to be used by artists today including automatic drawing, collage, decalcomania, exquisite corpse, and frottage.

Walter O'Neill, Director of the Art School will present this talk. After a short introduction on J. Pierpont Morgan and his collection we will view the special exhibit "Drawing Surrealism" to explore the central role of drawing in surrealism. Drawing was the primary means for expression and innovation by the surrealist artists. We will discuss drawings by Salvador Dali, Max Ernest, Joan Miro and other artists. The surrealist movement was one of the most dynamic and international art movements in history.

DIALOGUE WITH ARTIST: Casey Inch
An Introduction to Oil Painting from Start to Finish

Thursday, Sept. 13, 6-8pm
$10, pre-registration requested, limited enrollment
Landscape, oil painting demonstration. Mr. Inch will demonstrate the technqiue of painting a landscape. This introductory lesson will cover all aspect of the process of oil painting including blocking in a composition, building up color from dark to light as well as techniques to create a sense of atmosphere and light

Wednesday, Sept. 19, 6-8pm
$10, pre-registration requested
Still-life, oil painting demonstration. Mr inch will demonstrate how to paint a still-life in oil paint,including mixing colors, use of mediums, how to create a composition,and build up the surface to create space, volume and sense of light. 
 
DISCOVERY TOUR to Lower East Side Art Galleries 
Free for current members, $20 for others. Pre-registration required.
The Lower East Side is the newest art neighborhood with over fifty contemporary art galleries between the Bowery and East Broadway. Join us on a walk and discussion to view a selection of ten of the art galleries. We will end at a Dim Sum cafe on Canal Street and East Broadway.

Contemporary landscape painter will discuss his inspiration and working methods.  Participants are also invited to bring in their own paintings or drawings of New York City to share with the artist and others in a group discussion.

DIALOGUE WITH ARTIST: Walter O'Neill
Thursday, July 8, 2011, 6pm

Fresco painter and teacher, Walter O'Neill presents a hands-on workshop on the materials and techniques of fresco painting.  Using only tradtional methods participants will experience painting in fresco. We will draw the cartone, transfer the drawing and paint in the freshly laid plaster.  We willcopy details from  the work of great masters of fresco from Pompeian murals,  the Renaissance or the fresco work of Diego Rivera.

DIALOGUE WITH ARTIST: Giuseppe Luciani
Sunday, October 24, 2010, 3-6pm
Giuseppe Luciani paintings are a visual account of everyday life in New York City, his images are often images of the city that we see everyday but do not notice.  The artist will show images of his work and discuss his inspiration, technique and working methods. He will also lead a short hands-on workshop on painting with gouache (opaque watercolor). Participants are also invited to bring in their own paintings or drawings of New York City to share with the artist and others in a group discussion.

Ever wonder how an artist sets up her studio, generates ideas, and gets to work? Get an inside look into the studio and working method of professional artists in their own studios right in the neighborhood, on Eldridge Street. Katherine Jackson will show and discuss her glass-and-LED constructions; April Vollmer will discuss and show the wood block process she uses to create delicate images. http://www.aprilvollmer.com

DIALOGUE WITH ARTIST: Shai Kremer

Shai Kremer will discuss his photographs and 7 year project photographing the landscape of Israel. Attendees are invited to bring in their photographs of Israel or other landscape photos for discussion. Kremer’s photographs of the landscape of Israel are rigorously beautiful, and inevitably allegorical. Working on this project for seven years, Kremer’s goal is to make formal compositions in which the viewer can contemplate the scars of military action—be they subtle or traumatic—on an embattled land.

Curator David Gibson will moderate a panel discussion with artist couples whose works are represented in the exhibit "The Better Half" this is currently in the Ernest Rubenstein Gallery.

DIALOGUE WITH ARTIST: Jenny Dubnau
Wednesday, February 11, 2009 6:30pm Free, but reservation required

Jenny Dubnau's portraits are often seen straight on and typically from the shoulders up, based on photographs that she took in unforgiving light against a neutral studio background. Yet, painted with skill and nuance they hold the viewers attention. Ms. Dubnau will discuss her work, and contemporary portraiture. Participants are invited to bring in portraits painting, photographs or drawings for open discussion with the artist.  The presentation is co-sponsored by Artists & Audiences Exchange, a public program of NYFA.

DIALOGUE WITH ARTIST: Pat Oleszko

Downtown artist, and thirty-year veteran of performance art Pat Oleszko makes a spectacle of herself-and doesn't mind if you laugh. Utilizing elaborate costumes and props, she has created lithe performantzes, films and installations. Ms. Oleszko will discuss her work including performance and costume, show a film of a performance and lead a lively dialogue about art and performance. http://www.patoleszko.com Pat Oleszko is a 2009 Artists' Fellowship recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). DIALOGUE WITH ARTIST: Aurora Robson

Aurora Robson will show images and discuss her working process, technique and inspiration. Ms. Robson turns the most simple or ugliest detritus into profoundly beautiful objects and installations. She is comfortable in both sculpture and two-dimensional work. Following the lecture presentation the artist will lead a hands-on workshop on making collage from junk mail. DIALOGUE WITH ARTIST: Ming Fay ON PUBLIC ART

Ming Fay, a long time resident and artist of the Lower East Side, will discuss his art work with a special focus on the mosaic mural he designed for the Delancey Street Subway station in 2004. The artist will show the actual drawings and plans and discuss the process of the competition to final installation. DIALOGUE WITH ARTIST: Carter Kustera
Sunday, Febuary 4, 2007, 3pm

Get a glimpse into the working methods of artist Carter Kustera in his studio. A resident of the neighborhood will discuss his paintings and product design work, Kustera exhibits nationally and internationally. He also creates product design and designs Barney's fashison shops world-wide. The presentation is co-sponsored by Artists & Audiences Exchange, a public program of NYFA.

DIALOGUE WITH ARTIST: Patty Catereau

Patty Cateura will discuss the relationship between her ceramic sculpture and her painting. The artist will lead an open discussion on how she works in more than one medium, and how each feeds into one another.The presentation is co-sponsored by Artists & Audiences Exchange, a public program of NYFA.
