The Center for Balanced Living (CBL)
As perceptions of aging continue to evolve and barriers to exciting new beginnings increasingly erode, adults 55 years and older are re-defining the very definition of health. In today's world, health is no longer viewed as the absence of illness but as a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being. By incorporating this holistic philosophy into its diversified programming, The Educational Alliance Center for Balanced Living provides empowering classes, workshops, and social events focused on maintaining personal health, engaging the senses, and motivating you through an ongoing learning curve of experiences related to fitness, general wellness, and arts and culture.
Our fitness program is structured to offer a wide array of physical activities, quality instructors, and flexibility of scheduling options.
- Zumba: A Latin inspired dance/fitness program. The word Zumba is derived from a Columbian word meaning to move fast and have fun. Combining steps like Salsa, Cha-Cha, and Merengue, a high energy fusion of Latin and International music, Zumba is a unique and effective program that everyone can do.
- Tai Chi: Believed to have developed in 12th century China, Tai Chi includes sequences of slow movements coordinated with deep breathing and mental attention, with benefits to improve posture, balance, flexibility and strength.
- Vinyasa Yoga: With poses that flow from one to another in conjunction with the breath, Vinyasa's strength is in its diversity, with no single philosophy, rulebook, or sequence that must be followed.
- Neuro Muscular Integrative Action (NIA): This program is a movement based class that fuses elements of yoga, dance, tai chi and martial arts but incorporates the freedom and creativity of improvisation.
- Power Yoga: Different from the gentle stretching and meditation that are associated with Yoga, this activity is vigorous, fitness-based approach with an emphasis on strength and flexibility.
- Balance Line & Strength/Cardio Core Strength: A total body workout stimulating cardiovascular fitness through active dance fusion and movement, muscular strength and endurance through resistance training, and core stability through Pilates principles and postures.
- Chair Yoga: These movements are gentle on the body and ideally suited for older adults, those with disabilities, persons with poor balance or for anyone who has trouble standing or getting on the floor to do exercise.
- Pilates: For decades the choice for dancers and gymnasts, Pilates is a body conditioning routine that increases circulation, builds flexibility, endurance, and coordination, and helps to sculpt the body through controlled movements done as mat exercises or with equipment to tone and strengthen the body.
- PACE: This is a group exercise class titled People with Arthritis Can Exercise.
Whatever your interest or level of capability, our dance curriculum offers a variety of individual classes and dance series including Tap Dance, Line/Jazz Dance, Chinese Dance, Chinese Dance, African Dance, Ballet, Flamenco as well as social competitions and performances.
General Health and Wellness
As an important component of overall programming, The Center for Balance Living includes a variety of participatory learning topics and activities to assist you with monitoring, maintaining, and adapting practical ways to promote a healthier lifestyle.

- Open studio ceramics

- Guest lecturers
The Center for Balanced Living invites you to participate in ongoing meet-ups and entertaining social activities that will help you stay connected to other members and program staff.
