Joseph B. Rosenblatt College Prep Program
100% of our College Prep students who applied to college are accepted to at least one of the schools to which they submitted an application. Most are the first in their families to go to college. These are just some of the results we have been achieving each year since the creation of this important program in 2007.
Now a critical component of our Teen Program at Manny Cantor Center on the Lower East Side, the Samuel B. Rosenblatt College Prep Program is helping youth who grow up challenging circumstances overcome those factors that inhibits their path to success.
Our approach to achieving success is specially tailored to address the challenges these youth face in recognizing what is possible in life and then daring to reach for it. Before entering our College Prep Program, we begin working with teens in middle school to encourage a college-bound culture so that once they are old enough to enter the program they have an awareness of the skills and attitudes necessary to be successful in high school and then college.
Once in College Prep, youth are provided with: one-on-one and small group advisement; SAT preparation using a curriculum created and modified to address their circumstances and needs; workshops on important topics like the application process, identifying colleges that are a good fit, financial aid and scholarships; mentoring and tutoring, and trips to colleges and visits with admission officers. Once in college, we continue to follow them in order to ensure a successful transition to the college environment and often to life outside NYC for the first time.
In 2014, 45 youth completed College Prep and all of them received scholarships and/or financial aid to attend college. Since the program began in 2007, 300 teens have completed College Prep and been accepted into college. Over these years, well-known companies and organizations such as The Charles Schwab Foundation, The Posse Foundation, Voya Financial (formerly ING), and Boys & Girls Clubs of America have awarded scholarships to our College Prep graduates.
In recognition of impact our College Prep Program is having in the lives of youth on the Lower East Side, Educational Alliance was the recipient of a gift of $1.0 million in 2014 from Sam Rosenblatt and his sisters Sarah Goos and Jill Gordon. The gift was given in memory of their father Samuel B. Rosenblatt, who died in 2013 and had a strong belief in the power of education to improve lives. In response to this generous gift, Educational alliance officially changed the name our College Prep Program to become the Samuel B. Rosenblatt College Prep Program.
