Arts & Culture
Arts and culture are an integral part of all our programming. We focus on fostering creativity in the arts for people of all ages and abilities.
The Educational Alliance Art School, founded in 1895, is one of the premier art schools in the city, offering quality instruction in the visual arts. The School’s courses provide the opportunity for creative expression, skills acquisition, and arts appreciation. We are committed to serving the greatest diversity of students because we believe that everyone-- regardless of age, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background-- should have the opportunity for self-expression and lifelong learning.
The Art School has a proud and storied history. Among the artists who have studied here are Mark Rothko, Louise Nevelson, Adolph Gottlieb, Barnett Newman, and Chaim Gross. Artwork by alumni can be found in many museums throughout the country, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Jewish Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, and the National Portrait Gallery. LABA is a laboratory for Jewish culture in which classic Jewish texts inspire the creation of new art. Developed by the 14th Street Y in 2007, LABA programming includes original theater productions, live events, gallery shows, salons, and performances for children and adults. Since its inception, LABA has engaged over 30,000 individuals and artists from the East Village and beyond and has presented 100 public programs and exhibitions. LABA has supported 70 artist fellows in the creation of new work, and LABA artists, in turn, have given back to the Y community, dedicating over 800 hours per year to presenting workshops and events for children. Work created by LABA artists has gone on to other major cultural destinations in New York City and throughout the world, including the BAM Next Wave Festival and the New Museum. Learn more >
