An Open Letter to New York
A message to Educational Alliance supporters and community members from President & CEO Alan van Capelle
I am writing you today with a sense of urgency as the values Educational Alliance proudly stands for are being threatened.
Since November 8th we have seen an increase in hate speech and hate crimes across the country targeting religious, racial and ethnic minorities. Bigots are feeling empowered and are trying to repackage themselves as mainstream. Those who are frightened by these events are looking to New York for leadership.
In this moment, what will New York do?
Educational Alliance is doubling down on our work to ensure that every person who walks through our doors regardless of the language they speak, their country of origin, their race, religion or sexual orientation will be treated with respect, dignity, love and given every opportunity to achieve their American dream. That’s what we did before November 8th and it is what we will do moving forward. But, we aren’t naïve and we know that we need to do more.
Immigrants in our community are frightened of being separated from their families and that’s why, in the weeks ahead, Educational Alliance will make legal services available onsite for our families. We refuse to be bystanders to hate crimes, bullying and intimidation so we will also hold public workshops on how to be good “upstanders”. Finally, we still believe America is the best nation on earth and the status of American citizen remains a dream for so many, so we will increase the number of citizenship classes we are offering to members of our community.
All of this work takes money. That’s why I am asking you to make a donation to our end-of-year campaign today. Show our community that this city has their back so we can start 2017 strong. Together.
Your contribution will have a direct impact and make a statement about your values. I encourage you to join our mission to help the most vulnerable New Yorkers. Please make your gift today.
